Vulvitis

Yasuko Yamamura, Kirk D. Ramin and Susan M. Ramin

Vulvitis, which is usually seen concomitantly with vaginitis, is a relatively common diagnosis is young women, particularly during pregnancy. Some of this may be attributed to physiologic alterations in pregnancy, including engorgement of the pelvic vasculature and immunosuppressive changes. The vulvar skin is especially sensitive, and vulvitis may occur in association with a variety of conditions, such as infection, allergies, or various medical illnesses such as systemic lupus erythematosus or diabetes mellitus.
