Viral respiratory infections are ubiquitous in human populations. The clinical illnesses they cause range from mild coryza to viral pneumonia to fatal respiratory failure. Respiratory viruses are mostly a nuisance, but pregnancy alters both maternal anxiety and clinical illness. Questions about the effects of colds and medications for colds are common obstetric concerns. A confusing, large array of viruses can cause acute upper respiratory illness (URL).
