Myocarditis

Myocarditis is a focal or diffuse inflammatory process involving the heart muscle. It may be caused by virtually any bacterial, viral, rickettsial, mycotic, or parasitic organism and can also result from several noninfectious processes. Viral infection appears to be the mot common cause of myocarditis in North America and Europe with coxsackie B accounting for nearly 50% of all cases and coxsackie A and echovirus and polio virus accounting for most of the remainder. Om;y a few cases of myocarditis have been reported to occur in pregnancy. In an early review in 1968, 4 of 22 patients with ciral myocarditis were in the postpartum period. A later study reported four cases with fatal outcome following an abortion with autopsy evidence of myocardial inflammation...
