The effect of pregnancy on breast cancer has remained controversial. It appears that at least part of this controversy is due to the dual effect of pregnancy on breast cancer risk. As Lambe et al recently suggested, pregnancy appears to increase the risk of breast cancer transiently for a short period following a first pregnancy but reduces the risk in the long term. They also suggested that a possible biologic explanation may be that pregnancy stimulates cells that have already undergone early stages of malignant transformation but induces differentiation of normal mammary stem cells and thus reduces their potential of malignant transformation later in life...
