There are approximately 3000 species of snakes worldwide, of which 10% are poisonous to humans. Of the 115 species of snakes in the United States, only 19 are dangerous to humans. Venomous snake families include Elapidae (cobras, mambas, Eastern and Arizona coral snakes, kraits, and most Australasian snakes), Viperidae (true vipers and Crotalidae, or pit vipers), Colubridae (the boomslang Dispholidus typus and bird snakes) and Hydrophidae (sea snakes). Venomous snake bites in North America primarily involve the Elapidae family (coral snakes) or the Viperidae (pit vipers of Crotalidae)...
