Forty to 60 million Americans suffer from allergic disorders that may involve the skin (atopic dermatitis or eczema, urticaria, or angioedema), nose or eyes (allergic rhinitis or conjunctivitis), chest (asthma), or gastrointestinal tract (food allergy). Close to 20% of women of childbearing age suffer one or more of these allergic diseases, and up to 4% are affected by asthma during pregnancy. Combined with disorders that mimic allergies (ie, nonallergic rhinitis, sinusitis, and hereditary angioneurotic edema) and those entities in which definable allergies are uncommon (chronic urticaria and chronic dermatoses of pregnancy), these illnesses represent the most common group of medical conditions associated with or complicating pregnancy...
